Hotels, most of us associate them with relaxation and time away from home, they're a place to rest and relax. However, dig deeper and you will find a lot of the places you got to switch off in have a history that makes them the hotbed for some of the worst hauntings in the world. In this video we're going to list the 5 Most haunted hotels in the United Kingdom, so sit back, relax and enjoy the video.

Number 5, The Mermaid Inn

The mermaid inn is a hotel that dates back over 600 years, in that time it has been witness to a plethora of negative activity. Amongst some of the worst guests in that long history were a gang of smugglers known as Hawkhurst gang, Who knows what criminal activity they did on the site of the hotel, however one thing is certain, from the many eye witness accounts it seems their violent personalities have never left. Amongst the list of haunting is that of Room 1 which is said to be haunted by a lady in white or grey who sits in a chair by the fireplace. Guests have reported waking up in the morning and finding their clothes on the chair wet, despite no windows or pipework being near the chair. And also the terrifying tales of Room 17 (Kingsmill) is named after Thomas Kingsmill, a Hawkhurst smuggler who inhabited the inn. It is said to be haunted by the ghost of a woman who was said to be the wife of the Hawkhurst gang founder George Gray. She was said to haunt a rocking chair in the room; guests would wake up in the middle of the night and see the chair rocking on its own, and found the room icy cold. The chair was eventually removed from the premises because it caused so many disturbances with guests.

Number 4, The Black Swan Hotel 

The Black Swan Hotel sits in the quaint town of Helmsley in North Yorkshire. To understand why a fairly unsuspecting hotel could contain so much activity you have to realise the setting it is in, york is a town that has a history dating back hundreds of years, being involved in the biggest events in English history from war to disease and revolution and prosperity. Amongst the multitude of ghost tales coming from the hotel, one of the most terrifying has to be that of 2 detached legs walking the corridors. However even more sinister is the belief by the hotel themselves that a chair sitting beside a fire is said to be cursed, and whoever sits in it comes to find misfortunate events occurring in their lives. However many of the other spirits at the Black Swan Hotel seem to be innocent enough, only being seen from a distance by guests. 

Number 3, Elvey Farm Hotel 

The Elvey Farm Hotel is situated Pluckley in Kent, a location that the paranormal community regards as one of the most haunted locations in the UK. One of the hotels most famous ghosts is that of the farm's previous occupant who committed suicide on the site. To this day guests of the hotel have reported to hearing his last words β€œI will do it”. Another paranormal phenomenon that is experienced within the grounds of the hotel is that of burning hay, even though its days of an operating farm have been and gone. The hotel has also been featured in a variety of high profile paranormal investigations that have caught evidence of violent poltergeist activity on the hotel's grounds. 

Number 2, Castle Stuart

Originally built in 1625 and used during times of war, it was restored in 1869 and used as a hotel and golf hotspot. Before the restoration, the castle was owned by James Stewart, the Earl of Moray. It is still not known why but at the time many residents deemed the castle to be haunted, much to the displeasure of James Stewart the owner. In an effort to disprove their claims he offered a modest reward to anyone willing to spend a night within the castle. The only person to take up the offer was a local minister, after leaving the minister to spend the night in the castle, James Stewart returned the next morning to find the man dead in the courtyard of the castle with a look of shock on his face. 

Number 1, Ancient Ram Inn

The Ancient Ram Inn is a Grade II* listed building and a former pub located in Wotton-under-Edge, a market town within the Stroud district of Gloucestershire, England. It is said to be one of the most haunted hotels in the country. The inn has been owned by many people since 1145 and was in the private ownership of John Humphries until his death in December 2017.

The Ancient Ram Inn has been the feature of many paranormal investigations, most notably was that of the ghost adventures team from the United States. On their show, the owner John shows what seems to be cult artefacts found within the building that relates to ancient pagan sacrifice rituals. He also goes on to detail the many demonic attacks he has experienced in the building. The Bishop's room is thought to be one of the most haunted rooms in the country, a room where terrifying activity has been witnessed, a ghost of a young lady has been seen hanging from the ceiling. Apparitions of Monks being seen in The Bishop's room along with the ghostly figure of a cavalier are frequently reported.
